EU snubs Facebook call for rules

EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton has said that Facebook’s proposed internet rules were insufficient after the social media giant published its second white paper on regulation. Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, earlier this week called for new rules and oversight of the industry to help restore trust as Silicon Valley firms grapple with “tech lash” and new legislation in Europe. “I believe good regulation may hurt Facebook’s business in the near term but it will be better for everyone, including us, over the long term,” he wrote in a Financial Times op-ed.
